Waycross Congregation Donates Church to Brewton-Parker

Posted By admin / December, 7, 2016 / 0 comments

By Mandy Corbin

Director of Marketing

“MOUNT VERNON— On, Sunday, Nov. 6, Brewton-Parker College President Dr. Steve Echols led a team of faculty and staff to Waycross to celebrate the donation of the Crawford Street Baptist Church facility to the college. The partnership agreement will allow for the development of an education program located at Crawford Street Baptist Church where students will have the opportunity to take classes in the area of Christian studies and earn a certificate of completion in the program. Students may also opt to turn those completed courses into earned college credit at Brewton-Parker.

“We are grateful to Crawford Street Baptist Church for establishing this new partnership with Brewton-Parker College,” stated Echols. “The gracious donation of their wonderful facility gives BPC a great location to connect with the entire region for ministry education and opportunities for our students to serve. We also look forward to working with other churches and the Piedmont-Okefenokee Baptist Association in doing all that we can to reach this key area for Christ. Crawford Street Baptist Church has been a beacon of light for many years. We appreciate the vision of Pastor Larry Ray and the congregation to continue to find ways to minister in years ahead.”

Dr. Billy Puckett, BPC Assistant Professor of Theology, who preached on Nov. 6, is excited about the new venture. “Included in the mission of Brewton-Parker College is the desire to serve the Church through the application of Biblically-centered truth in a community of shared Christian values. Through our new partnership with Crawford Street Baptist and the cooperative effort of our Georgia Baptist partners, we will be better equipped to accomplish our mission and serve South Georgia.” Puckett delivered a message of resurrection and hope, proclaiming the ability of God to regenerate lives and ministries and accomplish a new work at Crawford Street Baptist Church. “Dr. David Wilson and Voices of Truth blessed all in attendance with their extraordinary excellence in worship,” Puckett added. “Reverend Larry Ray, pastor of Crawford Street, and the congregation at Crawford Street were gracious hosts, blessing all with their gift of hospitality. Pastor Ray commented, ‘We’re so grateful for our partnership with Brewton-Parker College for the perpetuation of the ministry at Crawford Street Baptist and for the spread of the gospel through these diverse ministries.’”

“This is without a doubt, a stroke of vision and an abiding trust in the ministry of Brewton-Parker College expressed by Crawford Street Baptist Church,” stated Freddie Smith, Pastor of Sweat Memorial Baptist Church of Waycross and Brewton-Parker Board of Trustees Member. “Established in 1933, the church has come to a time of needing to find God’s direction for the over $1 million facility. This is exciting for BPC and for this wonderful fellowship of believers in Waycross.”

Brewton-Parker College is the only accredited four-year Christian college south of Macon and north of Jacksonville, FL. The mission of Brewton-Parker College, a Georgia Baptist college, is to develop the whole student through the application of Biblically-centered truth to a liberal arts curriculum in a community of shared Christian values.

Brewton-Parker Professor Desires to Share the Gospel with His Students

Posted By admin / December, 5, 2016 / 0 comments

By Mandy Corbin

Director of Marketing

“MOUNT VERNON—Brewton-Parker College’s new Associate Professor of Physical Science, Dr. Sampyo Hong, has a desire to share the Gospel with the students in his classroom.

Hong grew up in the southern east part of South Korea in an isolated rural village situated in a mountainous area. He didn’t always know Christ as his personal Savior. He came from a family with a Buddhist background, whose mother used to go to a Buddhist temple once or twice a year. He went to high school at a mission school founded in 1904 by American missionaries. “I received Jesus as my Savior when I was a freshman in Korea University, in Seoul,” Hong stated. “I was the first who turned to Christ in my family and immediate relatives.”

Hong graduated from Korea University in 1993. After graduation he served in the Korean Air Force for three years as a radar operation officer. He then decided to study abroad in the United States and was admitted to Kansas State University in 1999. He received his Ph.D. in 2005 in Theoretical Computational Physics.

After completing his doctorate, Hong worked at Kansas State University for a year as research associate before moving to the University of Central Florida. There, he worked as postdoctoral research associate. In 2012 he was promoted to assistant research professor and remained in that position until he joined Brewton-Parker College. Also during his time as assistant research professor at University of Central Florida, he held a visiting professor position at University of North Florida.

According to Hong, his interest in teaching began in 2010, and he has sought opportunities to volunteer to teach whenever possible. “Since 2012 I started to feel that I would look for opportunity to do both research and teaching. Thus I started to pray for such an opportunity,” he stated. “My prayer was simple: if it was the Lord’s will, may he lead me to a place where I could both teach and research; may He lead me to a place where God’s people were so many that my family could live and raise kids in a safe and Godly way; and if the place he led me to was a Christian college, that would be best.”

Ever since the age of 18, Hong has had a desire to share the Gospel with others, even though he wasn’t always allowed to do so in the classroom. “As I was not allowed to speak about Christ in class, I couldn’t tell students about Christ, but I used to tell my personal testimony to my teaching assistants and graduate students,” he said. “I also shared Christ’s gospel after class by distributing gospel tracks to students on campus.”

When asked what he liked best about Brewton-Parker, Hong responded, “The Christian environment, chapels, the kind people, small class sizes, and watching BPC soccer and baseball games.” He also added, “During my interview, I was very impressed to find that President Echols was interested in my personal testimony. It never happened in other places although most places that I was interviewed were secular universities. This and other experiences during the site interview convinced me that this college strives to be Godly and God’s people are here. I’m very glad that here I can teach, research, and freely share the Gospel with students without any restriction.”

Hong and his wife Deokyo have been married for 11 years and have two children, Rebecca and Joshua. In July 2016 his wife was diagnosed with an early stage of breast cancer and has since been taking radiation treatments, which she has completed. “Many people prayed hard for her and she appreciates all those prayers,” he said. “Indeed God was working and she is now in good condition. I would like to thank the BPC administration, faculty, and staff for their prayers and exceptional kindness.”
